They gave talks, created MP3 downloads, designed and printed a young people’s guide to the exhibition (in just 3 short weeks), made a short animation shown on the BBC Olympic Big Screen, helped to select the Big Blue Print on the rear of the Big Screen, created the day and evening ‘Living Reynolds’ event to bring Reynolds and his portrait sitters to life and step out of their frame! 2007:MUSEUM SHUT FOR REFURBISHMENT till November 2008
October:'Fright at the Museum' was an exciting, terrifying night! For the Big Draw 2007, The Core chose a Halloween themed event. Activities began with a promising start featuring Freddy Kruger as the doorman. A headless man and a spectacular magic lantern show also proved to be a success. Random drawing activities dotted throughout the Museum and a late night showing of 'Night at the Museum' rounded things off. The event marked another achievement for The Core who worked tirelessly to make sure everything ran smoothly!
June:Backstage tours held for members of the Youth Parliament and the Music Zone’s youth group Tempo. We hope that through shared activities we can maybe do some collaborative work.
April: The Core put on the ‘Famous Fashion Show’ in conjunction with the Snowdon’s Iconic Images exhibition. The Core worked with fashion students from Lipson Community College on a costume project inspired by the exhibition, Iconic Images, photographs by the world famous Lord Snowdon. Alongside this, a series of Saturday textile workshops were held for young people to make costumes inspired by the exhibition. The students showcased their creations along with the Saturday workshop designs on a catwalk to young invited guests at a prestigious Fancy Dress and Fashion Show event at the Museum at the end of April 2007, the highlight of which was the Umpa Lumpa that did the voice-overs and DJ Slayer.
January:The Core took part in a consultation for 'Human Cargo', an exhibition to celebrate the bicentenary of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.
2006
December:The Core held a BIG THINK to help group development and went to the Quasar at the Mega Bowl in Plympton. To celebrate a successful year!! Corey leaves.
October:The group organized an event around ‘The Big Draw’ . This involved family drawing workshops during the day with live music and t-shirt designing in the evening for teenagers. This year we were responsible for organising the whole event. The first daytime session was mainly aimed at children and families and involved drawing, creativity and imagination through making their own t-shirts, getting involved in a giant chalk drawing and turning a series of blank exhibition panels into colourful life. More than 360 people attended this event. Then, in the evening we held an invitation only event for young people of a similar age to ourselves. We ran the same drawing activities as the daytime session but this time they were accompanied by live music by popular Plymouth bands. We even had a break dancing troupe perform in one of the galleries. Around 300 young people came to this event and a great time was had by all!
September:The group set up a ‘myspace’ page to try and communicate with more young people in the Plymouth area. This also became an outlet to advertise and promote out events
July:Graffiti Garden project launch event with a barbeque in the Museum garden. This project was started over a year ago to decorate a new picnic area at the back of the Museum. Members of the group chose an area or a specific exhibit from within the Museum as their inspiration. We then displayed these on individual mood boards before bringing all the separate elements together into a final design. The design was then spray painted, graffiti style onto panels to fit together into an overall design. Each member of the group was responsible for certain sections of the design rather than certain panels, so we had to work hard to join the various elements together. The results of this project are now on display in the Museum garden and were officially launched with a special evening event organised and hosted by us. Launch of the ‘Picture Trail’. A quiz designed to encourage people to look at the exhibits in the Museum more closely. Can you find them all using only the pictures? If not we’ve given you some clues to help. Members of The Core helped to design the trail, and also created the pictures and clues for it. The trail starts in the main foyer of the Museum and has two themes for people to choose from - ‘Hands and Feet’ and ‘Heads and Faces’.
June:Met with Ghanaian theatre exchange students from the Theatre Royal Young Company and gave them a tour of Mount Edgcumbe House. Sam joins
May:Went paintballing! Connor joins
February:The group organize an event to go with the ‘Access All Areas’ music exhibition. A “live and loud exploration of contemporary music”, the Access All Areas exhibition explored different aspects of the music industry in an exciting way - with photographs of musical icons like Jimi Hendrix and Madonna as well as interactive exhibits such as a giant walk-on piano and a laser harp. We saw this world-touring exhibition as an opportunity to show that our group could be a great influence for good within the Museum. We were involved from the moment the exhibition was confirmed and contributed to the design of the publicity, got involved with the public relations and arranged a series of interactive music workshops aimed at teenagers, such as Dj-ing, rapping and African drumming. We also organised the launch party, which was attended by around 300 young people. Several local bands (Soul M8’s, Towards Reason, Future Empires and Autophobe) are invited to play live in one of the galleries. The group also decorated the museum blacking out the gallery where the bands where playing and putting up UV banners and a giant inflatable star in the foyer.
Jan:James joins
2005
December:Lee leaves
November:The Core contributed ideas to the proposed ground floor re-development at the Museum. A Café comes top of the list.
October:A Big Draw activity was designed and led by members of the group. The inspiration came from Quentin Blake’s illustrations of modes of transport! The Big Draw is a yearly event aimed at getting people around the country, both young and old, interested in drawing. We helped out at the workshops that the Museum held - all of which linked to an exhibition called “In All Directions” which was on display at the same time. The name of group is changed to ‘The Core’ and a new logo is designed. Corey, Andrew and Lee join. Andrew leaves.
September:The group as the Munch Bunch produces their first public newsletter - it took ages! But it helped to start making other groups aware of our existence.
August:The group work on the Graffiti Garden Project with Roy and Frazer, two local graffiti artists. The group uses their mood boards as inspiration to build up a design that incorporates lots of the group’s ideas into one huge mural. We learn about all sorts of graffiti painting effects and techniques- the most important of which is how to stop dripping! Two members of the group start the Picture Trail project. They photo the various hands & feet and heads & faces in the exhibits to make two trails for people to look for around the museum, with the help of cryptic clues. Kizzy joins and leaves!
July:‘In development’ photography and mood boards exhibition for the ‘Graffiti Garden Project’. The group worked on converting their photographic ideas into mood boards that where exhibited in the main foyers Discovery Centre.
May:Vicky, Sarah, Meryl, Kyle, Amy, Bethan and Ella leave

Visit to Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Spacex Gallery and Phoenix Arts Centre. Consultation session to contribute to a report about the young visitors to museums. Photography workshop for ‘In development’ and the Graffiti Garden project. The entire group took photos of their favourite objects around the museum, including “Moley” & “Foxy”, two of the stuffed animals in natural history, “Jack” the Bronze Age skeleton and a beautiful ammonite shell.
